UX/UI Design

Often used in one single UX/UI abbreviation, UX stands for User Experience design, and UI stands for User Interface design. They are both an essentially part of designing an experience for users.

User Experience Design

User experience (UX) is a person’s perceptions and responses that result from the use of a product, system or service. To successfully design a meaningful and relevant experience for your user, they should always be at the centre of all design and development efforts. The end goal is to create products that provide meaningful, useful, usable and satisfying experiences.

User focused iterative process

A perfect concept is not created overnight and in very few cases is the first idea ever followed through. Research, discussion, and testing is imperative to developing a relevant product or system, and there is a plethora of tools and methods available to carry out these tasks. The nature of these tools allows for quick and easy alteration. This is important as feedback is often given throughout the process from the user or client and thus requires rapid iterations. This cycle forms an iterative design process which guarantees that all final designs are thoughtful and meaningful for the end-user.

UX weaved through everything

UX design considers the entire process from start to finish, meaning it acknowledges all aspects of the user’s interactions with the service or product. Theoretically, user experience should be considered across every touchpoint and interaction a user may have with a particular device, app or product. However, this leaves the design process rather loose and broad but thanks to the core principles and practices of UX design the process can be aptly structured and tailored to the specific project needs.

User Interface Design

When combined, UX and UI design work dynamically to create a thoroughly considered and well-rounded final design. User interface design focuses on the presentation and interactivity, as it considers the overall look and feel of the product. The goal is to visually guide the user through a products interface intuitively. Desirability is the final touch to presenting a beautiful and engaging interface which can be achieved by exceptional user interface design. Because a lot of the projects we work on are complex and detailed, ensuring there is proper colour language and reasoning behind the UI helps the user to understand and interpret the interface.

Some questions you might have

What is the difference between UX and UI?

Although UX (User Experience) and UI (User Interface) design work harmoniously together to create beautiful and intuitive designs, there are significant differences. User experience is all encompassing term which has many facets, and in this case when used alongside UI as a UX/UI abbreviation, it tends to mean designing the architecture, flows journey the different users will take, whereas user interface design is more concerned with the look and feel of the product.

I need to show my idea to investors, can the UX/UI be demonstrated as a prototype?

At this stage in the design process your project can be mocked up into final screens using UI. These screens can easily be made interactive to show an example of how the software will look and feel once it’s been developed. If UX is implemented throughout the design process and the UI has been applied, you can still show these screens to investors for them to understand the overall feel of the software at this stage. We can make our flat screen mockups interactive so it feels like the actual experience. An interactive prototype is a very cost effective way of demonstrating an idea to both investors and users for feedback.

How do we improve the User Experience of our product?

User experience should be considered from the beginning of the process through to the end. A focus on functionality, usability, and desirability of using a product or software can ensure the user will enjoy using your product. It is important to understand what the users main frustrations and pain points are, and what their needs and goals are in order to then generate some solutions. User Experience needs to run through the whole product and there are a range of techniques and methods we use that can ensure UX best practices are applied to your product.
